When punk emerged as a violent reaction to the meandering musical and philosophical excesses of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, a vast array of pre-hippie cultural inspirations were seized upon, and mutated into something new. Thanks to early punk adopters like Iggy Pop, Poison Ivy, and Sid Vicious, leopard print, which had careened back and forth throughout the history of fashion from glamorous status symbol to tacky excess, would be forever imbued with an aura of reckless abandon and spiky disposition.
A new, collaborative capsule from Vault by Vans and Stray Rats, two brands with deep roots in the punk scene, celebrates the wild spirit of leopard print. Two classic Vans models, the Era and the Old Skool, combine leopard print canvas and solid, contrasting colored suede with black midsoles and subtle, varsity block letter Stray Rats text at the heels for a modern take on the grab bag experimentalism of punk style.
