Although London would belatedly get in on the action (and belatedly try to claim a share of the credit) the passion for three stripes footwear that wrote the book on modern, casual sportswear style was a phenomenon born in the ‘unfashionable’ north of England: places like the ‘Provincial’ cities of Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, and most importantly for the purposes of the latest adidas SPZL release, Manchester.

adidas links back up with three stripes fanatic, and designer Gary Aspden for a one to one recreation of the Universal Super, a semi-obscure handball silhouette featuring the classic combination of mesh upper, suede overlays and gum rubber sole. This special edition of the Wilsy SPZL features an extra Manchester twist; heel co-branding and lace jewels bear the name of the legendary, Manchester based New Order.

Indoor court silhouettes were a firm favorite, dating back to the earliest adoption of adidas on the style conscious terraces, and even as music and fashion mutated into the electronically influenced Acid House scene, shoes like the Universal Super went right along with it. Rechristened as the Wilsy SPZL, this adidas classic remains as timeless as ever.
