Made in the USA, the legendary 990 is one of the most successful running silhouettes in the entire New Balance catalogue. Originally developed with the express intent of being the priciest, top of the line running shoe on the market (which in 1982 meant hitting the $100 price tag), the 990 is one of those models that took on a life of its own, outside of the specific athletic field it was designed for.
New Balance's tagline describes the shoe as "worn by Supermodels in London and dads in Ohio," which sums up the 990s broad-based appeal perfectly. The combination of performance technology and refined but unassuming style imbues the 990 with a versatility that makes it an essential that transcends boundaries.
Unlike a lot of classic styles, which go unchanged for decades, New Balance has freely tweaked with the 990s design over time, arriving at their fifth variation of the shoe, the 990v5. The addition of additional cushioning, the rearrangement of the upper's mesh and suede, and a fully reflective U.S. flag emblem on the tongue make for a subtle streamlining of the classic design.
