At the beginning of the 1990s, the Seattle Mariners had still never finished above .500. The perennially sorry performance was reflected at the box office, and the franchise actually had one foot out the door as they negotiated a move to St. Petersburg, Florida. The turnaround that the Mariners completed by the middle of the decade was nothing short of miraculous.

At the center of it all was Ken Griffey Jr. By 1996, Junior wasn’t just Seattle’s brightest star; he was Major League Baseball’s top name. Naturally, when you’re a top name, you get a signature shoe. In 1996, that signature shoe was the Air Griffey Max 1. A cross-training adaptation of Griffey’s on-field footwear, the Griffey Max 1 was a comprehensively ‘90s, aggressive package, a hi-top silhouette featuring white leather and black nubuck uppers, ‘24’ branded ankle strap, bootie construction, and bold, wavy Visible Air midsoles.

With 2021 marking the 25^th anniversary of the Air Griffey Max 1, the varsity blue and volt colorway inspired by the Mariners’ old-school look has been reissued for the first time since  2016.
