Y-3 YUBEN LOW
As an iconic brand that has been around for decades, with countless classic shoes to its name, Adidas probably means something slightly different to each individual sneaker fan. Regardless of personal associations, there are two Adidas hallmarks that are always at the core of their work, a confident sense of style, and a willingness to innovate. The Y-3 range is where both of these impulses combine, through the creations of designer Yohji Yamamoto.
Forward thinking experimentalism and innovation are at the core of Yohji Yamamoto’s work for Adidas, but after sixteen years, it’s fair to say that the Y-3 imprint has earned the opportunity to look back, just a little bit, and indulge in some nostalgia.
The Fall/Winter 2019 collection from adidas Y-3 takes inspiration from the stalwart designs of the 70s, 80s and 90s. Of course, in the hands of Yohji Yamamoto, the definition of nostalgic is not exactly the same as it might be in everyday life. The old-school designs that have proven themselves so timeless are still filtered through the lens of Y-3.
The new, Yuben silhouette, in mid and low form, is a minimalist expression of a classic, canvas upper and vulcanized rubber sole basketball silhouette, with monochromatic colorways and subtly exaggerated midsoles. The Kaiwa, a running influenced silhouette also opts for monochromatic minimalism, rendering its sleek leather upper, suede heel and EVA midsole in a blackout colorway.
