In a traditional, full-course meal, the appetizer is light, finger food sized fare, which mostly serves to whet the appetite for the main course to come, 'traditional' being the operative word. In everyday life, the appetizer is more likely to be something like a giant serving of wings, or nachos. It's finger food sized, but it is substantial.
