x Brain Dead TEE

It might be overly dramatic to call trying to pin down Brain Dead’s aesthetic with a single descriptor a Sisyphean task, but still, it isn’t exactly easy. With a graphic smorgasbord that draws from an eclectic and esoteric range of influences, Brain Dead is one of those things that falls under “I know it when I see it.”

The Los Angeles design collective brings this signature, chaotic sensibility to a new, collaborative project with Converse, but applies it a little bit differently than those already familiar with the brand may have expected by focusing on a mash-up of patterns and construction. Believe it or not, the exuberant, wild designs actually have their roots in a piece of Converse history.

Although we’re used to seeing the Chuck Taylor rendered in every possible variant, it wasn’t until 1983 that the first graphic pattern, a camouflage print, was applied to the shoe, followed by glow in the dark animal prints in 1988 and a U.S. flag print in 1991. The Converse x Brain Dead collection utilizes these existing historical elements to create new, unique pieces.

The reimagined archival patterns are deconstructed and reconstructed a mismatched, hybrid design on the iconic Chuck 70 silhouette. The collection’s apparel takes the deconstruction/reconstruction outlook of the footwear’s multi pattern design, and applies it to the physical construction of the clothing pieces.

Two perennial favorites, the hoodie and the MA-1 bomber jacket are combined into a half and half design unified by a Primaloft lining, while an oversized sweatshirt subverts the basic look of the classic hoodie with a tall, mock-neck collar, patchwork and graphic embroidery. A selection of tees adds a familiar Brain Dead graphic component. Two bags, a small cross body pouch and a convertible duffle bag apply the mash-up aesthetic to everyday functionality, with asymmetric prints.
