Saying that Nike and atmos are longtime collaborative partners is, objectively, true, but doesn’t even begin to cover the historical ground claimed by the pairing of a global, sportswear giant with a Tokyo retail boutique focused on the, at that time, emphatically niche, collector’s market.
In 2002, the release of the now legendary elephant Air Max 1 wasn’t just the first, official Nike x atmos collaboration, it was the first Air Max 1 collaboration, anywhere, ever. Nike and atmos weren’t just breaking new ground in terms of historic firsts; they were setting in motion an entire culture.
Almost twenty years later, when collaborations are the norm rather than the exception, Nike and atmos getting together is more than just another release on that week’s schedule.
With vintage collecting having caught in Japan long before it took hold in mainstream, American fashion, the United States held a treasure trove of coveted product at bargain bin prices. After the conclusion of his studies at Philadelphia’s Temple University, atmos founder Hommyo Hidefumi brought as many vintage sneakers as budgetary and physical constraints would allow, the impetus for one of the most influential careers in the history of streetwear.
The latest release from Nike and atmos takes its visual cues from the earliest roots of atmos. The recently rereleased cult classic, the Air Max2 Light, outfits the Tuned Air debuting model in a patchwork construction made from vintage, 1990s Nike apparel. The aggressively bright colors and prominent branding that characterized the era’s design converges into a single, extra bold shoe, with swoosh or Nike Air branding on each, individual patchwork segment, and a clear, plastic overlay allowing this vivid collage to shine, uninhibitedly.
Launching alongside the Air Max2 Light is a range of co-branded apparel and accessories. The 90s inspired aesthetic is applied across a range of graphic tees, patchwork accessories and retro inspired track tops and bottoms.
