1989 was an especially hectic year for the former Warsaw Pact nations. So hectic in fact, that the events of 1989 are what made them former Warsaw Pact nations in the first place. In other words, you could be forgiven for missing the Polish military’s introduction of the wz89 Żaba camouflage pattern.
Among English language speakers, the pattern came to be known by the name “reptile” and although the reptile camouflage proved to be a bit too aesthetically ambitious to qualify as functional camouflage, the distinctive design made wz89 a coveted collector’s item.
There’s no excuse for missing out on this slice of martial design now, as fashion’s preeminent technical innovation wizards, Stone Island, have adapted the wz89 pattern for their Spring/Summer 2018 collection. Redubbed the “alligator,” the design has been reproduced and applied to a selection of Stone Island apparel using a variety of the brand’s signature techniques.
Cotton jersey. 6 color camouflage print, 5 pigments and 1 colored polyurethane with a raised effect inspired by a Polish "alligator" camouflage pattern. Stone Island Compass logo embroidery on chest. Monochrome jersey insert from the elbow down. Ribbed neckline and cuffs.
