The concept of energy returning cushioning that would was something that had been in the making for sixteen years. After countless experiments with springs and hinges, the “mechanical” aspects were discarded in favor of an innovative application of an existing, integral element of performance technology, foam cushioning.
Hollowed, foam columns equipped with dispersion plates absorbed impact by collapsing towards the center, and produced a spring like, energy return effect as they expanded back into shape. The finished product was dubbed Nike Shox.
Shox made a timely debut in time for the turn of the millennium. The unique appearance and dynamic new technological feel, not to mention a buoyant “boing boing” tagline, made an instant splash in the footwear world.
2003’s Nike Shox Total took a more aggressive approach to the innovative ‘mechanical’ cushioning. Where the technology was limited to the heel of the original Shox R4, the Shox Total opts for a full-length application of the distinctive Shox columns. A nylon/mesh upper, accented with hardshell overlays in a sleek, stripe pattern that recalls fan favorites like the Air Max Plus and Air Tailwind IV.
