PREDATOR TIRO PANT ZZ
The original idea for what would become the Adidas Predator was developed by former Liverpool midfielder Craig Johnston. Rubber ridges built into the upper aided in ball control and allowed for greater power and movement behind a player’s strike of the ball. The combination of the technology’s unique look and greater striking power called for a suitably aggressive identity. The Predator, sporting the now signature red, black, and white colorway was born.
If you possess a superstitious bent that renders you extra sensitive to things like auspicious signs, it’s worth nothing that the first goal scored in a top flight professional game by a player wearing Adidas Predators was a direct free kick scored by Celtic’s John Collins against Rangers. As far as grand, debut stages go, definitely “start as you mean to go on” territory.
2019 marks 25 years since the introduction of the original Predator. Over the course of the past quarter-century, various iterations of the Predator have been worn by a who’s who of soccer’s elite names: Del Piero, Alonso, Kluivert, Ince, Klinsmann, Ballack, Xavi, Raul, Gerrard, Kaka, just to name a few.
To celebrate this milestone anniversary, Adidas have paired up with two Predator wearing legends, Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham for a collection featuring respective ZZ and DB branded on-field cleats, trainers, jerseys, warm up jackets and pants.
Zidane’s footwear component features the 1998 Predator Accelerator, the model worn as Zidane collected that year’s Ballon d’or award, led Juventus to their third successive Champions League final, and most importantly, led France to victory in the 1998 World Cup. The Predator FG’s gold colorway is a visual reference to the revered award, while the navy dominant colorway of the Predator TR offers more subdued, casual style, in tune with Zidane’s own elegant but understated off-field preferences.
Beckham’s Predator model is the circa 2001 Predator Precision, the model worn during the most iconic bend it like Beckham moment of his illustrious career, the free kick in the dying moments of a World Cup qualifier against Greece that ensured England’s direct qualification, and sent arch-rivals Germany to the stress of the two-leg playoff round for good measure. Understated always ranked fairly low on adjectives used to describe David Beckham so both the FG and TR models sport the same, confident white and silver colorway.
The individual palettes carry over to the collection’s apparel, where Zidane’s gear is rendered in blue, red and gold, a fashion inspired twist on the classic bleu, blanc et rouge, French national team colors. The David Beckham apparel features white, silver and red, a stylistic mix of the colors of the classic England shirt with the sleek, modern, stylish confidence that made Beckham a global phenomenon.
