NIKE AIR ICARUS
The instantaneous reaction to a shoe called their Air Icarus is that, well, Icarus died. For those with a tenuous grasp on Classical mythology, Icarus was along was the son of Daedalus, a master architect and craftsman. As a rather poor form of repayment for Daedalus’ work on the labyrinth, the father son duo ended up imprisoned on an island. Daedalus put his skills to work, and fashioned wings from bird feathers secured with wax, which allowed the pair to fly off of their island prison. Icarus allowed his enthusiasm to get the better of him, and soared too close to the sun, melting the wax, and sending him plummeting into the ocean below.
Icarus has served as a tragic/romantic figure ever since.
Nike is bringing the 1991 Air Icarus runner out of the vaults for its 25th anniversary. The Icarus combines the sleekness of the space shuttle style running silhouette with a more robust, cushioned air unit that would be found on many 90s runners to come. When it comes to shoes, it’s best to remember Icarus as someone who, for at least one moment, was propelled to physical feats beyond his wildest dreams.
