A lot of people are familiar with Nike’s early history under the banner of Blue Ribbon Sports. A somewhat lesser known historical footnote is that when the company decided to forge out on its own, Phil Knight strongly considered naming the new venture Dimension Six. Thankfully, in a best of all possible worlds scenario, the radical, innovative, experimental spirit remained, while the Babylon 5 fan fiction spin off title was shelved.
In 2019, it’s safe to say that Nike’s status as the preeminent athletic brand allows them some room to play around with this sci-fi tinged slice of their past. Dimension Six is reimagined as D/MS/X, a concept that in Nike’s words, explores the limits of what’s acceptable.
The debuting N110 D/MS/X is a futuristic running design, with a generous dose of irreverence added to its aesthetically futuristic leanings. New N110 Flyknit yarn maximizes the contrast between weight and structural support, allowing the silhouette to leave exposed sections and raw edges that reveal the shoe’s inner construction workings, while providing extra ventilation. The foot hugging, minimalistic sleekness of the knit/mesh upper are contrasted with the exaggerated proportions created by a raised arch, made possible by a split sole unit.
