Murakami Tee (Portrait)
Takashi Murakami. The internationally renowned artist was so disillusioned with Japan’s apparent lack of identity in the modern art world, that he spearheaded his own. The resulting style was dubbed Superflat, and it drew from the great Japanese tradition of two-dimensional aesthetics, from traditional woodcuts, to manga comics. Murakami’s color soaked, cartoon inspired interpretation of this tradition vaulted him to prominence.
Vans. The shoe company that went from small, family concern to legend, based largely on their ability to cater to individual tastes. In turn, this led to Vans being sought out by people whose tastes made them individual.
The highly anticipated coming together of these two maverick entities makes perfect sense, not only philosophically, but functionally. The Classic Slip On provides an ideal canvas (no pun intended) for Murakami’s densely packed colorscapes to come alive, without extraneous elements getting in the way.The Vans x Murakami slip ons feature two trademark Murakami designs, a floral print and a skull print in three distinct colors, applied to the Classic Slip On. Don’t miss the accompanying t-shirts and skateboard decks, which feature the floral and skull patterns, as well as a self portrait of the superflat master.
