The Spring/Summer 2020 collection from TAKAHIROMIYASHITA The Soloist is titled duet. If you’re not paying attention, you might be tempted to think of duet as yet another entry in the mash-up culture that produces ersatz, hybridized versions of original influences, but a duet is very different from a mash up.
In a duet, each component performance, complete with all of its distinctly individual characteristics is equally important in comprising the finished piece, because each individual component is formed separately, solo, if you will, rather than simultaneously.
The Spring/Summer collection features the trappings of youth, with global icon Mickey Mouse featuring especially prominently, contributing familiarity, optimism and innocence, while the experimental menswear of Miyashita, for its part, chimes in with world-weary knowledge that just skirts the line of cynicism.
As a child, the hollowed out book represents a fun kind of mystery. Like trick or treating, it is the trappings of fear, but well supervised. Grown up, combination of the unknown, and a secret that someone would go to these lengths to hide, lend the novelty a more sinister edge.
