When it comes to artificially intelligent companions, talking about a means to an end is behind the times. The relationship between human and ART needs to be seen as an ongoing dialogue, shaped by changing circumstances, the way a human/human relationship would be. To begin with a predetermined end point, even one that is years or decades off, is to make the relationship one of object driven utility. In short, to fully realize the potential of human/ART interactions, humans need to treat the contributions of these machines as feelings not prompts or instructions.
