What differentiates soccer from other major sports is that the formation of clubs occurred long before the establishment of professional leagues. That means even the most massive, superpowered clubs can trace their origins back to the groups of enthusiastic factory workers or students who had no greater ambitions than playing this new game as much as they could. It’s why even the biggest global names inspire a deep devotion in their fans.

Pharrell’s latest project for adidas expresses this intensely personal sense of affinity, through the hands-on, individual creativity of the Human Race imprint. Team shirts made from modern, recycled materials are outfitted with iconic past designs, which have been reproduced with hand crafted graphics, highlighting the boundary erasing human touch at the core of the global game.

Although in some quarters, the combined effect of blue and white was considered skirting the line of sky blue, the geometric ‘snowflake’ away shirt worn by Manchester United from 1990 through 1992 remains a favorite retro design among fans. Serving as the first away shirt of Ryan Giggs’ career and a 6-2 humbling of Arsenal in the 1990/91 League Cup are especially memorable highlights of this shirt’s tenure.
