What differentiates soccer from other major sports is that the formation of clubs occurred long before the establishment of professional leagues. That means even the most massive, superpowered clubs can trace their origins back to the groups of enthusiastic factory workers or students who had no greater ambitions than playing this new game as much as they could. It’s why even the biggest global names inspire a deep devotion in their fans.

Pharrell’s latest project for adidas expresses this intensely personal sense of affinity, through the hands-on, individual creativity of the Human Race imprint. Team shirts made from modern, recycled materials are outfitted with iconic past designs, which have been reproduced with hand crafted graphics, highlighting the boundary erasing human touch at the core of the global game.

Truth be told, the early 1990s were, by the astronomically high standards of Bayern Munich, a lull in the club’s fortunes. For example, in the 1992/93 season, Bayern finished a positively scandalous second in the Bundesliga, a point behind Werder Bremen. With the new, adidas Equipment range, over the shoulder, block stripes design though, Bayern looked as imperious as ever. (Also, they won the league in 93/94.)
