The Adidas Spezial range represents the most thorough immersion into the historical archives of Adidas that is available today. Designer Gary Aspden’s extensive personal background with Adidas, spanning a three stripes obsessed youth, as well as his professional work, is expressed in a range of product that is painstakingly historically accurate, and responsive to the contemporary fashion landscape.
For Autumn/Winter 2019, the Spezial collection places a particular emphasis on the Northeast of England, Aspden’s old stomping grounds. The classic look of the city series footwear range, suede upper, contrasting stripes, gum sole and a simple but chic low profile leisure silhouette, is recreated with the Blackburn. In the days of mill closures, and before the free spending of Jack Walker at Rovers made Blackburn a household name, the historic textile center was not on the city series roster. The Spezial take on the city series allows Blackburn to claim a place alongside Dublin, Berlin, Brussels, Koln, Stockholm, and the rest. The Blackburn’s green suede upper with vibrant red stripes is inspired by the heraldic Lancashire Rose, while the use of a navy midsole offers a novel visual tweak to this timeless terrace favorite. The SL 80 resurrects another terrace essential, the circa 1979 entry into the Super Light running series. The lightweight, nylon/suede upper is rendered in its original navy and gold, with red accents, colorway, which is enough to make any three stripes aficionado go misty eyed.
