Mountain Research’s output may be meticulously crafted and unfailingly chic, but designer Setsumasa Kobayashi isn’t necessarily connected to the worlds of traditional fashion or hype driven streetwear. As to be expected from a brand whose biannual collections are conceived of in a literal mountain retreat, practical functionality is always the foremost priority for Kobayashi and Mountain Research.
The Spring/Summer 2019 collection from Mountain Research adjusts the ratio of provocative, anarchist sloganeering to utilitarianism seen in their Autumn/Winter 2018 collection, as functional inspiration drawn from military, mountaineering, and hunting sources occupy center stage.
Emma Goldman, in actuality, probably never said if I can't dance, it's not my revolution, but in any case, the notion that even the most practical minded ways of thinking need to leave room for some kind of playfulness to flourish, remains relevant. To that end, Mountain Research have outfitted the commonplace functionality of a carabiner and stash pouch with one of the most recognizable trappings of playfulness, the teddy bear.
