AIR ZOOM ALPHA
Back in 1995, Nike introduced a new form of air cushioning. Tensile fabric strands positioned in the forefoot to maximize toe propulsion were paired with a traditional, shock absorbing air unit. Dubbed ‘Tensile Air’ in the prototypical stages, the technology was rechristened ‘Zoom Air’ by the time it made its debut in a range of LWP (Lightweight Performance) shoes.
Nike’s latest, historically significant reissue brings the first running shoe to feature the full-length version of Zoom Air, 1996’s Air Zoom Alpha, out of the archives. Not just a technological breakthrough, but a visual one. Full-length Zoom Air was made possible by four pod units that extended the cushioning and energy returning benefits from toe to heel. The Air Zoom Alpha marked the first appearance of these pods and the distinctive wavy midsole design that accompanied them. The eye-catching midsole served as the base for an upper design that continued the wavy motif, with the miniaturized swoosh branding in vogue in 1996 cementing the dynamic aura.
The Air Zoom Alpha’s 2019 return kicks off with the first ever reissue of the shoe’s original binary blue colorway, along with a new black and volt variation.
