Travel back to the year 2000 for a moment. Nike have once again, redefined the parameters of running shoe design with the revolutionary, t-shirt inspired Air Presto. The Olympic Games in Sydney would present a natural, global stage for Nike to introduce an unforgettable Presto design. Indeed, that’s exactly what happened; there was just one catch. The unforgettable Air Presto design released for the 2000 Olympic Games was not available to the public, for purchase. It was reserved exclusively for the athletes of Australia’s Olympic team.
The unobtainable status certainly contributed to the Australia Presto’s legend over the years, but their real immortality stems from the fact that the unobtainable status was attached to such an appealing design. The green and gold national livery of Australia is represented by a teal tinged, neoprene upper, featuring the stars of the Southern Cross constellation, taken from the Australian flag, applied at the toe, in place of the usual Swooshes. The Southern Cross motif is seen again on a custom tongue label, along with the ‘AUS’ IOC country code. The ‘AUS’ code also appears at the heel, rounding out this world class edition of the Presto.
All you really need to know for 2020 is that the Australia Presto is available for retail purchase for the first time. So, unless you’re planning to simultaneously master time travel, elite athletic talent and Australian citizenship, is there really anything to think about here?
