Launched in 2018, Nike’s On Air campaign solicits designs from Air Max fans in cities across the globe. In keeping with the interactive, personalized nature of the project, submitted designs are meant to highlight both the creators and their respective home cities. The winning entries, as decided by public voting, are then produced and released by Nike.

2019’s New York selection, designed by Gabrielle Serrano, is an Air Max 98 that celebrates the dynamic multiethnic cultural convergence of the city with a design titled La Mezcla, (the melting pot.) A color scale applied across the 98’s distinctive wavy upper represents the various skin tones of the 8.55 million people who call New York home, while a speckled mudguard is reminiscent of the literal city streets. The latitudinal/longitudinal coordinates of the city are also applied to the medial side of each shoe.
