Vault by Vans

The Space Age was ushered in with the Soviet Union launching the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1 into Earth’s orbit. Sputnik was essentially a radio pulse-emitting sphere, 58 centimeters in diameter, which is about the size of a yoga ball; in practical terms, it was no more threatening than a science fair project, but through the lens of the Cold War, it was practically the end of the world.

Amid fears of a technology gap, and Soviet controlled outer space, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1958, with the mission of taking the United States beyond the surly bonds of Earth. The agency’s work has been the stuff of inspiration and dreams for generations of people. If that wasn’t enough, NASA has become a hot commodity in the fashion world, as the retro-futurist aesthetic of mid to late 20th century advanced technology has added a new dimension to the perennially popular utilitarian chic style.

After tackling the whole “putting men on the moon” thing, a footwear collaboration seems a lot less complicated, so what better partner to celebrate the zenith of space exploration than Vans. Not only do the two entities share something of a mutual contempt for the limits of gravity, but the uncluttered and uncomplicated design of Vans make an ideal canvas for celebrating the extremely complicated workings of NASA.

The Vault by Vans ‘Space Voyager’ collection brings the NASA concept to life in intricate detail. The biggest compliment that can be paid to the finished product is that the collection would not look fractionally out of place at a NASA facility. The low cut Old Skool silhouette opts for a minimalist, tonal upper to showcase NASA typography, shuttle mission tongue tags, and removable U.S. flag insignia at the heels. A ridged midsole adds an aura of technological functionality.   The Sk8-hi features NASA and mission patches from the Apollo 11 moon landing (black variant) and the Voyager exploratory probes (white variant), along with ‘for the benefit of all mankind’ text at the heels.

Accompanying apparel and accessories allow for a complete, mission-ready look. It’s not the same as actually going to space, but it might be as close as you can get while standing around on the Earth’s surface.
