Frida Kahlo OG SLIP-ON LX
The Vans Off the Wall spirit of individuality and creative energy has seen collaborative editions of the brand’s legendary footwear adorned with the work of an array of renowned artists, including Vincent Van Gogh, Takashi Murakami, Ralph Steadman, and John Van Hamersveld.
For Summer 2019, Vault by Vans makes another foray into the art world, for a footwear capsule honoring a true icon, whose work and influence continues to reverberate in the present day, legendary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Three, iconic silhouettes, the Slip-On, SK8-Hi, and Authentic are outfitted with all-over print graphics featuring a selection of Kahlo’s most famous paintings.
The SK8-Hi features the first large scale work completed by Frida Kahlo, 1939’s The Two Fridas. A solid green tongue and toebox comprises the front of the shoe, with the famous double self portrait wrapping around the sidewalls and heel.
The Slip-On features Kahlo’s 1940 work, Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, with the open canvas space allowing the bold, autobiographical close up to shine, unimpeded.
The Authentic features an all-over application of Frida Kahlo’s final completed painting, 1954’s Viva la Vida, a vibrant, still life portrait of cut watermelons, with one of the fruits bearing the viva la vida (long live life) inscription on its flesh.
