Last year, for the 40th anniversary of Air cushioning's debut, Nike brought the very first model, the Air Tailwind, to feature the groundbreaking technology out of hibernation.

If years and years of aggressively experimental Air Max design has conditioned you to expect something, visually off the wall, prepare yourself for a surprise. The mesh upper, suede toe and heel accents, foam tongue and waffle sole are standard Nike design elements, shared with other running silhouettes of the era. Considering the impact that the technology housed inside the shoe would go on to have on sneaker design everywhere, the Tailwind sports a deceptively simple design, but that’s a feature, not a bug.

Even before the development of Air, Nike was well on its way to becoming the benchmark in performance running footwear, while the uncluttered sleekness of their designs were already catching on as casual wear. The easy to wear but stylish versatility of the Tailwind made an ideal vessel to introduce a new, revolutionary technology. After reissuing the OG, vast grey and photo blue Tailwind in 2018, the followup, the Air Tailwind 79, returns with a slate of its own original colorways for 2019. Unlike the first wearers forty years ago, you’ll know exactly what you’re stepping into, from the moment you put it on.

If a size is not listed, it is sold out.
