The New Balance 990 is a different kind of classic. Its popularity over the course of many years is pretty standard stuff, but what makes the 990 different is that New Balance have had no qualms about updating the silhouette. Currently on its fifth design iteration, the 990 is the essence of a go anywhere shoe. Naturally, in the course of its travels, the 990 has been to a seafood restaurant or two.
New Balance outfits the 990v5 in two colorways that are a celebration of a Mid-Atlantic fixture, Callinectes sapidus. More popularly known as the Chesapeake blue crab or the Atlantic Blue Crab, the distinctively hued crustacean is a longtime seafood favorite. (The Latin word for savory, sapidus, is right in the taxonomic name, after all.)
The suede and mesh upper and streamlined shape of the 990v5 is rendered in tones of blue, patterned after the crab’s coloring before it ends up on a plate, and a tonal red inspired by the sweet and tangy red/orange condiment that is an institution among Washington D.C. locals.
If a size is not listed, it is sold out.
