Fans of any rock subculture will have lived through some kind of manufactured debate about whether or not said subculture is “dead.” The longer you’ve been around, the more times you’ve heard it. The translation of “dead”, for the uninitiated, is that, for the moment, the culture in question has ceased to function as a reliable source of income. It doesn’t mean that the music or fans have actually gone anywhere.
As an integral part of so many subculture fashions, the same debate has followed around Doc Martens. When punk, goth, grunge, etc is “in,” Docs can’t be praised enough. When the trend of the moment is elsewhere, well, despite the lack of pull quotes, they aren’t going anywhere.
For Spring 2019, Doc Martens renews their collaborative relationship with influential Japanese imprint Beams, to demonstrate just how versatile Dr. Martens’ iconic footwear styles really are, with an elegantly reworking of the 3-eye 1461 shoe.
Smooth leather versions of the 1461, one black and one white, feature an outer, branded, metal zipper, tan lining and a co-branded sock stamp, while classic Dr. Martens elements, the Air cushioned sole, visible yellow stitching and heel loops provide a familiar visual base. The finished product is an authentic tribute to Dr. Martens’ subculture roots that can effortlessly transition to even the pickiest of “elevated” contemporary fashion standards.
