Finding avant garde fashion in Tokyo is like finding pizza in New York, not very difficult, if you know where to look, but Comme Des Garçons stands out thanks to a historical pedigree that few labels in contemporary fashion can match. 

Established in 1969 by designer Rei Kawakubo, Comme Des Garçons established a following in Japan throughout the 1970s, before debuting at Paris Fashion Week in 1981. 

Flourishes like violently anti-fashion designs, oversized padding, and deconstructed silhouettes may vary from season to season, but the uncompromising quality and expert construction are permanent signatures.
