A lot of people are familiar with Nike’s early history under the banner of Blue Ribbon Sports. A somewhat lesser known historical footnote is that when the company decided to forge out on its own, Phil Knight strongly considered naming the new venture Dimension Six. Thankfully, in a best of all possible worlds scenario, the radical, innovative, experimental spirit remained, while the Babylon 5 fan fiction spin off title was shelved.
In 2019, it’s safe to say that Nike’s status as the preeminent athletic brand allows them some room to play around with this sci-fi tinged slice of their past. Dimension Six is reimagined as D/MS/X, a concept that in Nike’s words, explores the limits of what’s acceptable.
Like its D/MS/X sister silhouette, the N110, the debuting Signal D/MS/X model is a unique, futuristic looking hybrid designs that combines a lightweight minimalistic base with external support and structural elements, for a multi layered look. A mesh upper features an external lacing structure reminiscent of the classic Presto, all encased in a thin, translucent sheath layer, from the toe to midfoot. This layer is held in place by a heel piece, which wraps around the shoe’s collar for additional stability. The Signal’s multi faceted construction is emphasized with the exaggerated proportions of a split sole unit, connected with an oversized, plastic shank.
