The town of Hawkins, Indiana may seem like a candidate to be officially named Anytown, USA, but there are things that go on under the surface, things that are, not usual. People whose senses are attuned to the extraordinary already have their suspicions about what really goes on at the seemingly innocuous Department of Energy complex, Hawkins National Laboratory. But things have been escalating; even those who would prefer to not know any better can’t ignore the strange phenomena and the disappearances. Questions have to be asked about what is really going on in Hawkins, Indiana. Namely, how does the physical education department of an average high school, in an average middle American town, come to be equipped by the preeminent name in sportswear?
In 1985, seeking out the latest fashions meant a trip to the consumerist paradise of the nearest mall, where they would be collectively packaged under one roof. In Hawkins, this means the dazzling, new Starcourt Mall. But, as Dustin, Steve, Robin and Erica discovered, there’s something very unusual going on behind the public facing veneer. The third installment of the Nike x Stranger things collection, ‘The Upside Down’ gets to the bottom of the unusual disturbances marring the summer. The Air Tailwind 79, Cortez and Blazer Mid are outfitted in a dull, neutral fabric, meant to be burned away, revealing the true, hidden design underneath. The hidden motif is continued with details on the sock liner and insole, featuring references to the clandestine Soviet base operating under Hawkins’ nose. The Upside Down drop’s apparel is decked out in a sinister, black and red palette, echoing the unearthly atmosphere of the alternate dimension.
