Undercover designer Jun Takahashi has never shied away from the unexpected. That includes defying expectations of what a given project may look like based on reputation alone. As a frequent Nike collaborative partner, Takahashi has often applied his street fashion influenced avant garde elegance to cutting edge, performance technology. The designer’s latest work for Nike sees him turn his attentions to the early days of the brand, with a contemporary take on an archival running silhouette.
Originally released in 1979, the Nike Daybreak sports a classic running shoe nylon/suede upper construction, atop a flared EVA midsole, a mix of simple good looks accommodating ever improving technology that characterized the era’s running shoe design.
Takahashi’s interpretation of the Daybreak sees the 1979 classic incorporate futurism tinged design elements. The nylon/suede upper and waffle sole comprise a familiar form that transitions into an aggressively updated, extended heel clip, with speckled detailing and modernist type face co-branding at the tongue, heel tab and midsole carefully but firmly emphasizing the Takahashi aesthetic.
