Concepted and designed by Angelo Baque and his team at Awake NY, the goal was to create something versatile, that can be worn day or night. The GEL-NYC pairs the brand’s newest technology with ASICS’ beloved archival designs. The shoe's upper comes from the early 2000s GEL-NIMBUS 3, mixed with a bit of the GEL-MC PLUS sneakers design. The GEL-NYC features the GEL-CUMULUS 16 shoe's tooling system, providing additional comfort for the wearer. The shoe takes its name from the city that birthed the new style: New York City. When thinking through the design, Baque was inspired by how kids across the globe wear the brand's past collaborative ASICS designs. From New York City to Paris and beyond, Baque was excited by the challenge to create something that could live in each environment in its own unique way, and how it would be embraced by youth culture across the globe. While the colorways may seem unconventional for a shoe that serves as a love letter to the city, Baque's picks were intentional and drew from a variety of unlikely references in his personal catalogue
