In his previous Training Series 002 collection for Nike, designer Matthew Williams interspersed the uncompromising modernity of high-tech performance and forward-thinking conceptualism with humanizing, ‘imperfection’ details. For his latest collaborative project with Nike, the all new, Zoom MMW 4, Williams amplifies the impression of user error’s impact on technological precision, with a design described by Nike as inspired by two things coming together; car crashes and bent metal.
A single layer upper fuses multiple mesh segments with no-sew, fused seam construction, evoking both a sense of lightweight openness and of the unique, visual novelty that comes with the physical convergence of disparate materials. This feeling is enhanced with the addition of asymmetrically placed chrome overlays.
The balance between meticulously planned and suddenly crashed is even more evident when it comes to the Zoom MMW 4’s cushioning and sole units, featuring a combination of Pebax plates, Zoom Air and traditional EVA cushioning, along with a waffle traction patterned, elongated outsole.
