For our upcoming collaboration with ASICS, when it came time to brainstorm which model would be able to handle the grind of daily life while rising to special occasions, we just kept coming back to the GEL-KAYANO 20. Though steeped in performance pedigree, the KAYANO 20 shines brightest while helping you set personal bests off the track and away from the podium.

With a design language full of technical considerations, what makes this sneaker special is its cult-like following in fashion circles, perhaps at first in protest of the footwear status quo and the expectations of what was cool and what was not, but quickly growing into a movement that sought the model's comfort and unmistakable look.

But what makes the 20, the 20? Firstly it's the 2 Layer Spacer Air Mesh Upper to keep your feet tucked in without compromising breathability. As a result, you get this hypnotic design that may look a little like chainmail but is light as a feather. Continued on the tongue, overlays, and liner, the geometric patterns provide added depth to anyone willing to look hard enough.

Pressed right on top of the upper is the Fluid Fit design with Welded Overlays which keeps the toe-box secure without losing out on flexibility. However let it be known, cool welder helmets were not used in the crafting of this component.

Closing out the exo-skeletal curriculum is the heel clip and mid foot stability plate which provide the perfect launch pad for the titular GEL-technology to burst through the midsole. Adding yet another textural layer to the intricate design, the omnipresence of the gel itself reminds us that ASICS cushioning is second to none.

But the physical design would not be complete without the color palette and detailing to bring it to life. Exploring the nuances of a mid-2000s utilitarian palette, light gray makes up the cement foundation with darker grey accents providing much needed contrast. Using small hits of color, the less is more approach helps highlight the technology of the silhouette while bright green and golden yellow keep the color story completely dialed, symbolizing the light at the end of the tunnel after chipping away at the steps between you and your goals. A tone echoed under the hood as well where a truncated dome patterned insole represents how life can be stop and go sometimes but our GEL KAYANO can take it in stride.

Finished off with Bodega and ASICS branding near the outer ankle, at times, designing this shoe felt like a marathon, one we'll never forget - and maybe that's why we're so optimistic every time we look at it.
