Incorporated in 2009, Copenhagen-based brand Libertine-Libertine has quietly garnered a strong European following. A clothing company committed to using high quality materials and having a mature look, Libertine-Libertine nevertheless retains a playful feel that keeps its line exciting and youthful. As the Danish brand begins to bring its goods stateside, Bodega is proud to be an exclusive stockist of Libertine-Libertine’s SS12 collection.

In anticipation of its US debut, Libertine-Libertine co-founder Rasmus Bak was kind enough to sit down with us to talk about the cultures that have influenced them, the journey of an up and coming brand, and the creative process involved with a new collection. Read the rest of this entry »

Our friend Ian Paley over at Garbstore sits down with KTC-Manufacture Magazine to provide some insight on the future of menswear. Here’s an excerpt from the interview which can be found here...
Glenn Kitson [of KTC-Magazine]: I know you are a champion of functional clothing and the
performance–led product within the menswear market. From a
retailer’s perspective, could you give us an insight into the
state of production currently in the market?
|
Ian Paley: Well, it’s not just a sewing machine. With anything performance
related you have to have the fabric mills making the cloth and in
Britain it is still that very traditional kind of cloth. It tends to be wax
cotton or Ventile, which is an amazing cloth but it’s 80-year-old
technology. It’s got a great story, wasn’t it the first guy who went to
the Pole wearing Ventile? But technology has moved on since
then.
For us it’s a case of finding where the machines are to make this
stuff. There are outerwear factories in Eastern Europe, Bulgaria or
Poland, which a lot of people use. Some very good brands make
stuff out there but in Britain I am yet to find a high-spec, high-tech
factory capable of producing these garments. By and large it’s sent
abroad, it’s not done on our soil. This machinery is expensive.
Years ago I made some very good technical outerwear at a very good
factory in Portugal that could do all the heat welding and seam
sealing but it was the laser cutting and bonding that they couldn’t do.
It does seem like a huge investment for a factory to buy all this
machinery and the skill to use it as well because it’s not just a case
of sewing a straight line. You need a very skilled worker to operate
this level of machinery and advancements happen very quickly with
technical outerwear. Then there are the fabrics, you are essentially
melting and welding fabrics so each type will react differently. |

Presenting Bodega: Essentials, a brief glimpse into the Bodega family. In this weekly series, we will feature each member of our team. We’ll show you who keeps us up and running, who keeps us going further, and who keeps us in check.

It’s not easy trying to co-own a business. But for Jay Gordon, one of the three owners of Bodega, running a store is all about enjoying the little things. A Fenway native, Jay keeps his daily accessories down to a minimum. Peppered through his belongings are vintage items that sum up a man who spends the little free time he has either walking his dog Mack or shredding fairways with his trusty old Taylor Made. Though Mack’s leash and a worn out handkerchief are always on his person, Jay’s vintage Rolex and Corbo wallet are his prize possessions. A longtime fan of the Nike Air Max, or any running shoe for that matter, Jay keeps Bodega on track, but makes sure we try not to take ourselves too seriously in the process.

A part of Bushmills® Irish Whiskey’s “Since Way Back” program, Bodega is the product of a tightly-knit friendship that has lasted through the years. An Irish whiskey made for hundreds of years by lifelong friends, Bushmills started “Since Way Back” to appreciate these enduring relationships. With Shwood, both Bodega and Bushmills have the opportunity to collaborate with a brand that also values authentic craftsmanship. The Bushmills by Bodega and Shwood, a pair of sunglasses made from Bushmills’ own whiskey barrels, exemplify this commitment to a quality product.

Hailing from a town more commonly known for having built an athletic lifestyle empire, Shwood has carved out its own wooden niche in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 2009, Shwood has swept the sunglass eyewear community with a unique product: frames made from natural wood. Playing off conventional eyewear models, the young brand pays homage to these traditional silhouettes while updating them with a colorful array of exotic woods from around the globe.
In preparation for their latest collaboration with Bushmills Whiskey and Bodega, Shwood’s founder Eric Singer and brand manager Taylor Murray talked to our William Yu to discuss the brand’s origins, the perils of being a rising company, and The Bushmills. Read the rest of this entry »

Ever wonder if we carry something in stock? Then you’ve most likely come across our Angie. A photo/digital printing major, Angie keeps her daily items vintage and practical: a pair of Retro Super Future sunglasses, a tag from the Bodega x Rockport collaboration, and her ever present tape gun. But don’t ask her about the never been worn pair of the Bodega x Adidas AZX pack that she keeps hidden away somewhere in the store, she knows nothing about them. The New Jersey native makes sure we stay on our toes when it comes to shipping and receiving, but put her on the floor and she’ll put any sneakerhead into a spin.
